Don’t miss the closest conjunction of the year

On August 19, at 04:09 GMT, Mercury and Mars will appear extremely close to each other in our skies, with Mercury passing 0°04' to the south of Mars. The conjunction will be better visible from the Southern Hemisphere; use a pair of binoculars if you’re in the Northern Hemisphere.

Mercury will be the brightest one in the duet, shining at a visual magnitude of -0.5. The Red Planet, in its turn, will have a magnitude of 1.8. Look for them in the constellation Leo. To find the objects in the sky, use StarWalk 2.

The next time you’ll see such a close approach of Mercury and Mars (<0.1 degrees) will be in 2032, so don’t miss this chance!

The next close planetary encounter, in general, will be between Venus and Neptune on April 27, 2022.

Happy observations!
